Ultimate HD Resident Evil 4 coming to PC

Capcom announced today that nearly everyone’s favourite in the series, Resident Evil 4, will be re-released next month as a PC exclusive Ultimate HD Edition.

The previous 2007 PC edition was maligned for many different reasons, including native mouse support. On their press release, Capcom stated that a “complete visual overhaul has been performed to bring this revered title to the highest graphical quality ever. Fully optimized for the wide screen, texts have been sharpened and textures have been upgraded on characters, backgrounds and in-game objects.”

The game will run at 60 frames per second for the first time and offers everything from previous releases. It will be available across Europe at retail and on Steam globally. You can pre-order on Steam now, and if you do you’ll get a digital soundtrack and digital art book thrown in as well.

Resident Evil 4 : Ultimate HD Edition will be available on February 28.

Hardware prototype confirmed by Valve & Beta announced

Announced today on their official site, Valve confimed that a hardware prototype is in the works and a beta will be launched.

300 lucky users will be able to test the hardware, if you’re interested in applying there’s a few steps you’ve got to take. Firstly, make sure you log on to Steam before October 25th and access your quest page to see if you’re eligible. If you are, then join the Steam Universe community group and agree to the terms and conditions. You’ll need at least 10 Steam friends and a public Steam Community profile, as well as being able to play at least one game with a controller in Big Picture mode.

If you complete all the steps, you’ll be “awarded a special badge” and be among the pool of people who the lucky few are chosen from. The list will be locked on October 25th.

“While these products are still in development, we need your help,” Valve wrote. “As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open.

“At Valve we always rely on real-world testing as part of our design process. The specific machine we’re testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors.”

The company will be releasing more details about the prototype soon and noted that “nearly 3,000 games on Steam” will be available for the beta.

This announcement follows from the reveal of SteamOS that came on Monday. Their third and final announcement will hit on September 27th.

Steam Family Sharing announced by Valve

Valve have announced a new service feature, Steam Family Sharing, that allows friends and family to share their libraries of Steam games. It will become available next week through a limited beta and is supported on PC, Mac and Linux systems.

While friends and family members can play each other’s games, individual members will still be able to keep saves achievements intact via the Steam cloud. If a user authorizes their device for sharing, their library will be available for others to access. The owner of the game will always be able to play their games, if a friend is ‘borrowing’ it and the owner starts playing it then the friend has a few minutes to purchase it or quit.

Sharing can be authorized for up to 10 devices at any time, with libraries shared in entirety. Valve have stated that some restrictions will apply, for example, games that require a third-party key, and that DLC will not be available to buy for those who do not own the game themselves.

Steam are giving a thousand users access to beta for Family Sharing, which is available to register for here.

Final DLC for Dishonored due in August

‘The Brigmore Witches’, the last installment of downloadable content for Bethesda’s Dishonored will be available on XBox 360, PS3 and Steam on August 14th across Europe, and on August 13th in the USA.

Following on from April’s DLC, ‘The Knife of Dunwall’, players will continue on as assassin Daud as the “twisted narrative” comes to a close. Players’ upgrades, Chaos level and actions from ‘The Knife of Dunwall’ will all be available for you to carry across to the new DLC via a save file option.

“After discovering the identity and intentions of Delilah, the leader of the Brigmore Witch coven, you set out to disrupt her from completing a powerful ritual that will spell your doom,” reads a line from the content’s description.

“Having already been betrayed by your lieutenant, Billie Lurk, you must rely on feuding gang factions–the Dead Eels and the Hatters–to negotiate your way through previously unseen districts of Dunwall en route to Delilah’s stronghold.”

‘The Brigmore Witches’ is the third DLC pack for the franchise, with the first, ‘Dunwall City Trials’ introducing ten new challenge maps.

In November, Bethesda stated that the game outperformed their expectations, so despite that this is the last announced pack, there is a chance that there may be more of Dishonored to come.

Steam may soon allow you to share your games with friends

As Steam users will know you can’t share your downloaded games with friends, not in the way the console users can by simply lending them a disc. But this may be about to change, after three lines of code were discovered in the latest Steam client beta.

The lines of code in question are:

  • “SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title” “Shared game library”
  • “SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText” “Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%. Playing now will send %borrower% a notice that it’s time to quit.”
  • “SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_BorrowerText” “This shared game is currently unavailable. Please try again later or buy this game for your own library.”

From that it appears that you will be able to let other Steam players borrow your games, and then take them back when you fancy.

What this means for publishers we don’t know, or whether if Steam will go ahead with it. But there is the possibility that Steam users will be able to share their games with other users, just like you can do with console games.
